Last Updated: September 04, 2019Create an answer key in Canvas
An answer key is used to score your upcoming exam.
Default answer key view
- A single response is counted as correct
- In the “default” view enter the letter (i.e., A, B, C, D, or E) that corresponds to the correct answer for each question on your exam. By default, GradeHub assigns 1 point for each correct response.
- You can also enter multiple correct responses for a question in the “default” view. In this case, the student will receive credit for any correct response entered.
- Here is an example using the answer key in the figure above:
Student 1 responses
Question 1 - A (Correct)
Question 2 - C (Incorrect)
Student 2 responses
Question 1 - B (Incorrect)
Questoin 2 - B (Correct)
Explanations:
Question 1 is a typical multiple-choice question where a student receives credit for answering A.
Question 2 provides credit for students that answer A or B as the response. For student 1, C is incorrect. For student 2, the answer of B is scored as correct.
Advanced Scoring Options
Select the “+” in Advanced + for advanced scoring options (e.g., multiple correct answers, no credit, penalties, and extra and partial credit). To return to the collapsed view select the "-" in Advanced -.
- Multiple Correct Answers
- Click the "*" to change a correct response from a single to multiple answers required for the correct response (e.g., A & B). After you click * it will change to “&”.
- Here is an example using the answer key in the figure above.
Student 1 responses
Question 2 - B (Incorrect)
Student 2 responses
Question 1 - AB (Correct)
Student 3 responses
Question 2 - C (Incorrect)
Explanations:
Question 2 provides credit for students that answer A and B as the response. For student 1, only B is marked so it is incorrect. For student 2, the answer of A and B is scored as correct. For student 3, C is incorrect.
- Click the "*" to change a correct response from a single to multiple answers required for the correct response (e.g., A & B). After you click * it will change to “&”.
- Weighting Correct Responses
- Enter “Points” value under the “+” column to change the points from the default value of 1 point for a correct response. Points can be any number ≧ 0. Enter zero to provide no credit. Enter values > 0 to change the weight from 1.
- Here is an example using the answer key in the figure above.
Student 1 responses
Question 1 - B (Incorrect)
Student 2 responses
Question 1 - A (Correct)
Explanations:
Question 1 provides 2 points credit for a correct response. For student 1, B receives 0 points. For student 2, the answer for A is scored as correct and receives 2 points.
- Enter “Points” value under the “+” column to change the points from the default value of 1 point for a correct response. Points can be any number ≧ 0. Enter zero to provide no credit. Enter values > 0 to change the weight from 1.
- Penalties
- Occasionally, instructors assess penalties for incorrect responses to discourage guessing. To provide penalties for an incorrect answer, enter the point value to penalize incorrect responses under “-” column within the Points section. Note: the “-” penalty input cannot exceed the “+” points for a given question.
- Here is an example using the answer key in the figure above.
Student 1 response
Question 1 - A (Correct)
Student 2 response
Question 1 - B (Incorrect)
Explanations:
Question 1 provides 1 point credit for students that answer A as the response and a 0.5 deduction for incorrect responses. For student 1, A is marked so the student receives 1 point credit. For student 2, the answer B is scored as incorrect and the student receives a -0.5 point penalty.
- Occasionally, instructors assess penalties for incorrect responses to discourage guessing. To provide penalties for an incorrect answer, enter the point value to penalize incorrect responses under “-” column within the Points section. Note: the “-” penalty input cannot exceed the “+” points for a given question.
- Partial Credit
- To assign partial credit for any response other than the correct one, enter a point or point values to award partial credit for a given question.
- Here is an example using the answer key in the figure above.
Student 1
Question 1 - A (Correct)
Question 2 - AB (Correct)
Student 2
Question 1 - B (Partial credit)
Question 2 - B (Partial)
Student 3
Question 1 - AB
Question 2 - BC
Student 4
Question 1 - BC
Question 2 - BCD
Explanations:
Question 1 provides 1 point credit for students that answer A as the response and a 0.5 point partial credit for B. Student 1 receives full credit for answering A. Student 2 receives partial credit of 0.5 for answering B. GradeHub’s partial credit rules allow up to one incorrect response. More than one incorrect response scores the question as incorrect. For Students 3 and 4, the student receives partial credit of 0.5.
Question 2 provides 2 points credit for answering A and B and 1 point partial credit for answering A or B. Student 1 receives 2 point credit for answering A and B. Students 2 and 3 receive partial credit of 1 point for answering B. Student 4 has more than one incorrect response so the question is scored as incorrect.
- To assign partial credit for any response other than the correct one, enter a point or point values to award partial credit for a given question.
- Extra Credit
- Select the "extra" box to have a question scored as extra credit.
- When using GradeHub for Canvas, ensure that the “Possible Points” for the exam excludes extra credit questions. When you sync scores to your grade book, GradeHub will return a raw score including the extra credit to your exam. For example, if you have 21 questions all weighted as 1 point on your upcoming exam and question 21 is for extra credit, when you create the “+ Assignment” in Canvas you should enter 20 “points possible” for the “assignment.”
- Here is an example using the answer key in the figure above.
Student 1 response
Question 3 - E (Correct)
Student 2 response
Question 3 - B (Incorrect)
Explanations:
Question 1 provides 1 point extra credit for students that answer E as the response For student 1, E is marked so the student receives 1 point extra credit. For student 2, the answer B is incorrect so the student does not receive extra credit.
Create answer keys for multiple versions of a test
-
- You can add up to 5 test versions of a given test.
- To create a new answer key for a test version select the Answer Key drop-down box.
- The default answer key for a single test version is Answer Key "A."
- Add additional test versions with the Answer Key B through E options.
- Each answer key must have the same number of questions.
- Click Save when finished.
-
Student answer sheets
- When students take the test and mark a test version (see example below), GradeHub automatically applies the marked key. If there is only one test key, GradeHub automatically assumes Answer Key “A.”
- There’s no need to sort your test by key before scanning.
- You can change the key marked by the student after testing or add a key for those students that forgot to indicate the test version in the Student Analysis and Correction report. Here is a sample of the blank answer sheet. When students print their forms, we automatically complete their name and student ID to eliminate bubbling errors that frequently occur with student IDs.
-
Edit answer keys
- You can change the key at any time, and GradeHub will re-score your test automatically.
- Once you're done creating your answer key, you can move onto the next step and upload student tests - see Step 2 - upload student tests for instructions.
